Why, you ask? * Music is a part of everything * Songs, lyrics, music has inspired a multitude of inventions, ideas, thoughts, art, movies etc. * There has been one song, one sentence or lyrical paragraph from a song in all of our lives that has MOVED us either to tears or elation. You are going to artistically portray this song. Pay homage, if you will.

Essential Questions: 1.How and why is art used as a vehicle for communication? a.Culture affects self-expression whether we realize it 2.How can emotion be shared artistically?
Learning Objectives: Students will- * Enhance acrylic painting skills * Understand the art of layering * Develop creative portrayal of their emotions
STEPS: 1. Choose a favorite musician, band etc. 2. Pick a song that TRULY means something to you...don't be lazy 3. Paint aesthetically interesting layers using multiple layers of acrylic paint 4. Repeat ^ for several layers + adding and subtracting colors and lyrics 5. Paint meaningful or symbolic portrayal of the chosen song 6. Layer in lyrics throughout process 7. Create a QR CODE to song's YouTube link, hang with painting in hallway! 8. Write an artist statement : *how this song speaks to you, what it means *the processes of your process
Constraints: - song of choice (that speaks to your SOUL) -acrylic paint - printed lyrics -spray bottles -canvas - bubble wrap
Acrylic Tips: ·be expressive (DUH) ·play with adding + subtracting elements ·discard areas of composition you DON’T like * I want you to practice: - layering (liking each inch/ making sure every angle is aesthetically pleasing - not being done with preliminary painting - painting with PASSION - expressing feelings with imagery ·make it AUTHENTIC and REAL * make the viewer wonder "How?" * PLAY + HAPPY ACCIDENTS! * paint without thinking/thoughts (initially)
Acrylic Demo: * simultaneously layer words + glazes * each word = a piece of art
Must haves (debrief): 1.Lyrics hidden, woven, underplayed in painting. 2.Meaningful (to you OR song) imagery element of symbolism. -could be the artist/singer who inspired you? -Something random that comes to mind 3.Written paragraph explaining why this song speaks to your soul.
