Think of a city or town in a country, far far away. Or close? Choose a place where your family resides, or maybe somewhere you've always wanted to travel to. What place came to mind? Albuquerque? That's where Bugs Bunny always ended up on accident in the 1940's classic cartoon. Please tell me your generation has seen Looney Tunes?
You will be painting a blank, wooden arrow in your artistic style to accurately portray your city/country. The arrow will have your city + mileage pointing in the direction of that said destination from campus. The final product will be different creations pointing to destinations all over the world, as a permanent sculpture at AHS.
STEP 1: Research the city/country you have picked. Just a little bit to figure out how to depict this country's style through color, pattern, even font. Research Prompts: What is the country's state bird? What is the country's terrain? What is the country's flag? What is the country known for? What is the country's language? *** write these down + a little sketch along side of the answers ---> on your DP titled " Destination Creation/ Painting Class***
STEP 2:
Sketch a rough draft to illustrate/depict your city/country for your arrow. * examples: Australia in aboriginal dot pattern/design Israel in Hebrew lettering Hawaii with a coconut, rainbow vibe Ohio in farm house red Athens, Greece in Greek font/olives ?: * what color best portrays your city? * what font would be appropriate for your city?
MUSTS for COMPOSITION: * large lettering to fill most of arrow space * legible writing * aesthetically pleasing * colorful and accurate design, correlating to your city's style
BELOW: this is my beginning research on Athens (step 1 and 2)
STEP 3: Use Google Maps to figure out EXACT DISTANCE IN MILES from AHS to your city. (22 Osprey Way, Durango, CO 81301) *screenshots below on how to measure distance in Google Maps* example: Athens, Greece 6,845 miles (round up)
1. Type in AHS's address --> Your destination 2. Right click on map and choose "Measure Distance"
3. Click and trace distance from AHS to your destination 4. Drag black line to create a straightish line (shortest distance) 5. Record distance in Miles (rounding up)
Step 4: paint your final (creative) lettering and mileage on your arrow (does NOT matter which way arrow is pointing...you will determine that when affixed to final sculpture at school.
FORMAT example: ATHENS 6,845 mi. (no need to put country or "miles" in full unless you have the space)
MUSTS for COMPOSTION: * large lettering to fill most of arrow space * legible writing * aesthetically pleasing * colorful and accurate design, correlating to your city's style
Initial Critique Questions:
a. Does the lettering fill the space? ** ensure the lettering is large enough to read from a distance** b. Is the painting clean? c. Does the Composition flow? d. Is the subject matter fitting? e. does the font aid the vibe or deflect?
